I sat in the driver’s seat, clipped my seatbelt, started the ignition, and took a long… deep… breath. Why was I feeling so unsettled?
Why, after a lovely lunch with a longtime friend, did I feel tired and a little down?
What was causing the uncomfortable feeling in my gut?
Over time, it became clear that the reason I was feeling that way was because my relationship with my friend had changed. Our values had grown in different ways, and the expectation to stay connected in our ‘old way’ was no longer serving either of us. I felt especially drained that day and realized I’d been trying to keep the relationship alive through sheer will and effort.
We’ve all heard that people come into our lives for ‘a reason, a season, or a lifetime.’ I’ve found that this isn’t just a saying, but a reality. There’s no need to look for the right or wrong in the temporary nature of some friendships— it’s just a matter of a relationship running its course. And when it does, we must look for the blessings the friendship has brought us and be strong enough to move on.
On the other hand, healthy, uplifting, value-sharing relationships enhance our lives and well-being. Investing time with a friend or a group of friends, having fun, supporting one another, providing empathy, and jointly holding the mirror for honest mutual growth is crucial for living a balanced and fulfilling life.
