A NEW Family Holiday Tradition + Fall RECIPE

The children sat politely at the restaurant table and joined in the conversation, laughing and enjoying their time with family. It was a refreshing sight to see.

We were in an area of Mexico where most of the local children and teens don’t own personal cellular devices, and it’s extremely rare to see anyone on their mobile phones while dining, walking, or even waiting for the local bus.

And it wasn’t just the children, everyone at the table seemed ‘contenta.’ Content. A term the Mexican people use interchangeably with happiness and gratitude. It wasn’t so much about the absence of cellular devices, but more about the ongoing conversation, laughter, and smiles.

It’s a strong tradition of the Mexican people to focus on family, connection, and community.

Here in the US, we focus on family and community as well, but being in Mexico was a powerful reminder about the importance of giving ourselves freedom from technology’s influence so we can commune about the things that really matter.

Communication within a family is essential to the foundation of a strong home.

When my family gathers together for the holidays, we have the tradition of going around the table and asking each person to share something they appreciate about the person to their right. Or, if the group is small, we go around the table one at a time and each person shares what they appreciate about the person whose turn it is.

It’s a wonderful way to honor each person, create bonds with each other, and foster an environment of enjoyment and positivity.

While I’m sure you have wonderful traditions of your own, I’d like to encourage you to give this one a try.

What are your family traditions? Let me know!
